Puerto Rico started cultivating coffee around 1750, and produced copious amounts of coffee until the 1920's when coffee plantations were decimated by a series of hurricanes and tropical storms. Puerto Rico has never returned to the quantity of coffee produced in those early years. With most of her plantations at 1,000 to 3,000 feet; Puerto Rican coffee is not particularly High Grown. However the soil and growing conditions of Puerto Rico are excellent. Most of the coffee produced in Puerto Rico is consumed there.
